Sophomore Katie Scannell!
Congrats to proud alum Kristen Mathews for guessing correctly...she now takes a 2-pt. lead in the race to become the "Best RedHawk Fan"
In a recent interview, here's what Katie had to say:
MUTF: How'd you decide on Miami?
KS: Coming to Miami was a last minute decision for me...I had attended a very small University in Nova Scotia, Canada during my freshman year. But, the summer after my freshman year I woke up one morning and said, "I want to transfer.".
So, I started looking into schools around Ohio, and my cousin (whom currently attends Miami) mentioned Miami. I did a little research, came to visit about a month before school started, and was hooked. Miami is ranked-well academically, and has a great campus in a small, safe town. What could be any better? :)
MUTF: What advice would you have for someone who is considering becoming a part of the Miami Track & Field family?
KS: As corny as this may sound - being a part of the track and field team has totally confirmed my decision to transfer. When I tried-out for the team last fall, I was not entirely sure I made the correct decision on transferring. But, once I joined the team- and started running well in the 400m Hurdles during the spring- my feeling about Miami totally transformed. The experience has been amazing so far!
MUTF: What do you do in your free time?
KS: I volunteer at the Bunker Hill Haven House for boys. I go every Thursday evening and tutor/mentor troubled youth for a few hours.
MUTF: What are your goals for this year?
KS: To be the best that I can be! My main event, the 400m Hurdles, was new to me last year...and, my coach says I haven't yet scratched the surface of what I am capable of. So, hopefully, I'll go sub-60 this year!

MUTF: What advice would you have for someone who is considering becoming a part of the Miami Track & Field family?
KM: The thing I enjoy most about Miami is the personal relationships. At Miami, class sizes are smaller, which allows you to really get to know professors- and have them get to know you. My professors actually care about their students, and push them to be the best they can be!
MUTF: What are your future plans, after you graduate?
KM: As of right now, I am interested in working in a hospital with recovering stroke patients. My major is speech pathology and audiology, with a minor in coaching. I'm interested in the speech pathology/audiology field because it is a very needed field, and it allows for a variety of work options (i.e. rehabilitation centers, retirement facilities, etc.). I want to be able to help people live a full and "normal" life.

So, I looked into the school and took a visit...once I arrived, it blew away every other school! It's gorgeous here!
MUTF: What advice would you have for someone who is considering becoming a part of the Miami Track & Field family?
RP: Miami is a great place! Great academics, great athletics...and it's all situated on a gorgeous campus!
MUTF: So far- what do you enjoy most about Miami?
RP: My favorite thing about Miami is the fall season. Fall is my favorite season because I'm a fall baby, its cross country time, and the campus is unbelievably gorgeous!
Over the years, Miami has begun to feel like home...it's just small enough to make you feel like we have something really unique here.
MUTF: As a Miami student-athlete, we know that you are very busy with your academic and athletic endeavors...what do you do in your free time?
RP: Outside of school and running, I volunteer at the Knolls(a local retirement community) in the physical therapy department. Other than that, I'm just a normal college kid...hanging out with friends and finding ways to NOT do homework.
"Name That 'Hawk" will return next week on Wednesday...

Congrats to Miami alum Kristen Mathews for being the first person to submit the correct answer, again! Mathews and fellow alum Alexis Lape now are dead-even in the race to become the "Best RedHawk Fan".
In a recent interview, here's what Hope had to say:
MUTF: How'd you decide on Miami?
HA: I chose Miami because I used to skate, and Miami has a really good skating team. But, after I decided to attend Miami, I had a really good outdoor track season my senior year in high school, and I decided I would rather run track.
MUTF: What advice would you have for someone who is considering becoming a part of the Miami Track & Field family?
HA: We are not only an increasingly-talented team, but we are also all invested in each others success. You'll have a hard time finding a team as close as we are!
MUTF: What's your best memory- so far- of your time at Miami?
HA: I have so many...but... one of the most embarrassing/fun moments for me was doing the "Napoleon Dynamite" dance with Ruthie, Magda, and Katie during our freshman year!
MUTF: As a Miami student-athlete, we know that you are very busy with your academic and athletic endeavors...what do you do in your free time?
HA: Outside of school and track, I like to bake, but I'm not very good at it. I also love travelling and playing with my dog.

Congrats to Miami alum Kristen Mathews for being the first person to submit the correct answer! She currently sits in 2nd place (behind fellow alum Alexis Lape) in the race to become the "Best RedHawk Fan".
In a recent interview, here's what Katie had to say:
MUTF: How'd you decide on Miami?
KL: I chose Miami because it was close to home, the academics were challenging, and I felt comfortable on the beautiful campus. I also felt Miami would help me improve as a runner.
MUTF: What advice would you have for someone who is considering becoming a part of the Miami Track & Field family?
KL: Miami is a great institution to attend because you get a quality education, while also being part of a team who is dedicated to being the best. Plus, the campus is beautiful and the people are lovely! I can't imagine being anywhere else!
MUTF: What's your best memory- so far- of your time at Miami?
KL: I can't pick just one memory! The back-to-back MAC championships, of course, were quite enjoyable...but, I also have loved the little moments the most...going on bus rides, singing in the cold tank, and staying to talk for an hour after dinner- just to put off homework!
MUTF: As a Miami student-athlete, we know that you are very busy with your academic and athletic endeavors...what do you do in your free time?
KL: When I am not in class- or I'm not running- I love to take naps and play solitaire. I'm addicted to both!!!

Congrats to Miami alum Alexis Lape for being the first person to submit the correct answer...again! She is quickly establishing herself as the "Best RedHawk Fan".
In a recent interview, here's what Amanda had to say:
MUTF: How'd you decide on Miami?
AM: When I started searching for schools, I came across Miami...I was blown away by how beautiful it was! Then, when I visited, I quickly saw that everything suited me perfectly...especially the size of the campus...not too big, not too small. Plus, everyone I met on my visit was friendly and helpful. I could tell that Miami was going to help prepare me for the rest of my life.
MUTF: What advice would you have for someone who is considering becoming a part of the Miami Track & Field family?
AM: There are so many advantages...I'll just name a few, though!
1) Our program is awesome...we take training very seriously, BUT, we also have lots of fun...it's like having another family.
2) Our Coaches. They are extremely personable (Coach Towne is my favorite!) They have a tremendous amount of knowledge...which is why their athletes always improve.
3) Our campus...its beautiful! It is what you would imagine a college campus would look like!
MUTF: What's your best memory- so far- of your time at Miami?
AM: Winning the 2009 MAC Cross Country Championships...no one but us thought we could "repeat" our 2008 Championship- but we did! Also, traveling to big meets, like the Penn Relays...it gives us a chance to bond as a team during the bus rides, plane rides, etc.- and we get to go toe-to-toe with the "best" in the country!
MUTF: As a Miami student-athlete, we know that you are very busy with your academic and athletic endeavors...what do you do in your free time?

That 'Hawk Is...
Senior Ruthie Rasch!
Congrats to "Alexis" for being the first person to submit the correct answer...she is now in the running to be called "Best RedHawk Fan".
In a recent interview, here's what Ruthie had to say:
MUTF: How'd you decide on Miami?
RR: I only looked at 3 schools seriously- one from each NCAA division. I eventually decided on Miami because it had a good reputation for being academically rigorous, and because it was the closest school to my family...what can I say, I'm a home-body! Then, I visited and met with a the Track & Field staff, and began to realize that I had a chance to compete at a D1 school. This realization was both humbling and also an opportunity of a lifetime that, in the end, I realized I just couldn't pass up.
MUTF: What advice would you have for someone who is considering becoming a part of the Miami Track & Field family?
RR: Meet a wide variety of girls- not just the girls in your event area...it's always amazing to me to see how much passion everyone has for their event! Also, ask lots of questions!
MUTF: What's your best memory- so far- of your time at Miami?
RR: As a student athlete at Miami, I've really enjoyed the relationships that I have made with my teammates, coaches, and professors. But, my best "Miami Memory" took place this past spring, when we shattered the school record in the 4x400m Relay at the MAC Championships. We ran 3:42, and posted a 7 second improvement over our previous seasonal best- we really showed ourselves that we do have what it takes to be champions...it was wonderful! (to see Ruthie and her teammates break the school record, click here.
MUTF: As a Miami student-athlete, we know that you are very busy with your academic and athletic endeavors...what do you do in your free time?
RR: I am a Mass Coordinator at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Uptown Oxford...I have been a member of my dorms' Community Council, which planned all types of events for residents...and I am a proud member of the National Science Teachers Association :)

Off To a Solid Start...
Our season got off to a solid start this weekend at Vanderbilt University's Black & Gold Classic. We had several highlights, including:
-Magdalena Halina Wikar's lifetime PR in the LJ. Magda jumped 5.73m (19' 8.75") to win the meet. Teammate Nicki Mitchell took 2nd place.
-Sophomore sensation Rachael Clay's liftime PR in the 200m Dash. Clay eclipsed her previous PR by .6 seconds, as she posted a time of 25.12.
-Freshman phenom Layne Baggett's lifetime PR in the 100m Hurdles. Layne ran 14.35 to place second.
-Diona Graves nearly-lifetime PR in the 100m Dash. Graves took 2nd place, finishing in a time of 12.02. Her teammate, Margarita Pogorelov, finished just behind her in 12.05 seconds.
This weekend, we'll look to continue our solid start "on the Plains", as we travel to Auburn, AL.

Ball State Preview
Senior vaulter Amanda Rhoades offers a preview of the Ball State Quadrangular Meet...
Tomorrow, we travel to Ball State for a quad meet against Ball State, Western Michigan, and Northern Illinois. This meet will serve as a final tune-up for the MAC meet next weekend at Central Michigan. This weekend, we are thinking big, staying motivated, and competing with passion so that it will carry over into next week’s championships.
Although the meet is small, we still need to make every opportunity count. We cannot forget the "little things" of every event. We must get better every meet, so that when we arrive at CMU we are at the top of our game and ready to compete for the MAC title.

Details...Details...Details
Even though we didn't have the most detail-oriented performance, we were able to win the 2010 All-Ohio Championships. Highlights included:
Nicki Mitchell's NCAA-qualifying mark in the Pentathlon. Nicki posted a lifetime-best of 3,884 pts. to finish first, which currently ranks her 14th in the country. Her score also included a new lifetime-best of 5.95m (19' 6") in the Long Jump.
On the track, Rachael Clay led the way for the RedHawks in capturing the 400m Dash, and running a leg on the victorius 4x400m Relay. Fellow sophomore Diona Graves also performed well for the RedHawks, as she registered a new PR in the 60m Dash (7.75) and placed second in the 200m Dash.
We will have one final tune-up meet, as we travel to Muncie, IN for the Ball State Quadrangular on Friday. Senior Amanda Rhoades will provide a meet preview on Thursday's blog entry.

All-Ohio Championships Preview
Senior Captain Brittney Bernardoni offers a preview of this weekend's All-Ohio Championships...
Wow, this season is going fast! There's only 14 days left to the MAC Championships- where we plan to show just how far we've come this year.
Until then, though, we are taking it one step at a time...this weekend we are headed to the All-Ohio Championship in Bowling Green. Our training is really starting to pay off, and we expect to have some big things happening at this meet. All-Ohios will be our warm-up for MACs, so I can’t wait to see how many PR’s we achieve!
My favorite part about this team is how well we have come together as a team. No matter where you are at a meet, you can hear Miami voices encouraging our teammates…“I see your Hope!” “Lookin’ good Amanda!” “That ‘a way Kristen!” “Get After it Nik!” Everyone knows your PR and your goal for the meet, and can’t wait to congratulate you once you achieve it.
This team atmosphere will make the MAC Championships even more fun and exciting, as we watch our teammates taking down the competition. We have made a Commitment to take care of business on and off the track these last few weeks to put ourselves in the best position possible to accomplish great things on the 26th and 27th.
This year, we're gonna Create The Order!

Meyo Invite Preview
Nicki Mitchell, a senior multi-eventer for the RedHawks, offers a preview of this weekend's Meyo Invite at Notre Dame...
So far, we have had some solid performances, with numerous PRs at every meet. It’s exciting to see that the hard work we put in at practice is paying off...
What’s even more exciting is seeing the team's excitement...everyone is keeping track of everyone else’s PRs and sharing in their excitement. And, when you have that kind of team unity, you can really feel how committed this team is to winning a conference championship! We are encouraging each other to improve at every meet because we all have the same goal- to win MAC's.
But, despite the exciting outcomes we have had so far, we cannot be satisfied yet. Our training is built to peak at MAC's, so in the words of Frank Sinatra...the best is yet to come.

IU Relays Preview
Kristen Mathews, a senior high jumper for the RedHawks, offers a preview of this weekend's Indiana Relays...
Miami’s Women’s Track and Field Team cannot wait for the MAC Championships...This year, we are going to MAC's to "Create The Order”...We want rings, and we are going after them.
On the way to MAC's...we have things to do. This week, we're off to the Indiana Relays, where we'll show the progress that we have made in our training.
In the sprints, we have the super-fast Lindsey Forconi, Diona Graves and Margarita Pogorelov entered in the 60m and 200m Dashes. “We're getting into competitions now, so, practice has changed...we're trying to sustain our fitness- not build on it" says sophomore Lindsey "Linda" Forconi. "I like it, because it makes me feel fresher...like I'm more able to run fast. I'm excited, because so far the training feels successful and I want to see how well everyone does this weekend!"
In the other sprints/hurdles events, MU will have Rachael Clay, Maria Holztrager, Tasha Profit, and Ruthie Rasch banking around the rest of the field in the 400m Dash, while freshman Layne Baggett and junior Alex DeWitz will be hurdling over the competition in the 60m Hurdles. The RedHawks will also look to keep their 4x400m Relay unbeaten streak intact, as they face their toughest competition to date.
In the jumps, Adrienne Cristofoli, Nicki Mitchell, and Magda Wikar will be long jumping, while Hope Alexander and Krista Stillson will be triple jumping. All will be jumping far. Across the infield, Alyssa Janezic, Kristen Mathews and Nicki Mitchell will be jumping high. "Our jumpers are making progress every week," says Kristen Mathews. "Every time we miss it’s just something little, so when it all comes together, like it is starting to, we are going to have some very nice looking jumps over some very high bars.”
And, last but not least, Vaulters Brittney Bernardoni, Sarah Kinnaman, Amanda Rhoades, and Hannah Tabler will be vaulting so high they could stop and change the lightbulbs in IU’s oddly lit facility. "Everyone is making huge improvements in practice and it will show in the meets when it matters most,” said senior Brittney Bernardoni.

Competing with Passion
"Nothing great has even been accomplished without passion."
-German Author
Our ladies showed much greater passion this weekend, as we competed at the Indiana University Gladstein Invitational. Highlights included:
Day 1
Senior Captain Nicki Mitchell nearly recorded an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark in the Pentathlon. Her score was less than 90 points shy of her personal-best. Look for Nicki to hit the provisional mark very soon.
Our "field" group was led by Hope Alexander, who improved her season's best Triple Jump by nearly .5 meters. Hope is quickly re-becoming one of the MAC's best triple jumpers.
Day 2
Our 4x400m relay team ran nearly 5.5 seconds faster than a week ago, to post a time of 3:51.01...Rachel Clay led the way with another solid anchor leg (55.4 seconds). Clay was also part of a 200m contingent (Pogorelov, Graves, Clay) who showed marked improvement, as we posted 3 of the top times at the meet.
In the field, senior captain Brittney Bernardoni led the way, as she recorded a new seasonal-best in the Pole Vault (3.72m). Brittney will soon be clearing really high bars.

Better Things To Come...
The season began in earnest on Saturday, as we competed at the BGSU Women's Team Challenge.
Highlights included Rachael Clay's anchor leg of the 4x400m Relay and Magda Wikar's effort in the Long Jump. Rachael ran a poised, passionate 56.3 split to keep us undefeated in the 4x400m Relay on the year. Magda rebounded from a poor preliminary round and recorded two solid jumps in the Finals to place third.
Overall, our month-long layoff was apparent, as the girls seemed flat- just as I expected. That will change, however, over the next few weeks. We'll now begin to adjust our training to allow for optimal performances at the end of February...

It's time for our Indoor Season to begin in earnest, as we head to the BGSU Women's Challenge tomorrow. Several MAC schools will be there, including Ball State, Bowling Green State, Central Michigan and Toledo.
The girls have had a very solid week of practice this week, as we transition into the 2nd semester. It'll be exciting to see how we perform tomorrow. And, even more exciting, performances should get better and better throughout the remainder of the season!
